Kagoshima, Japan

Kagoshima’s beautiful landscape is dominated by the Sakurajima - one of the most active volcanos in the world.

We were able to see Sakurajima, the city’s iconic volcanic island, from the Sengan-en garden It was too bad about the gloomy weather, but at least it didn’t rain!

Sengan-en is a Japanese garden attached to a former Shimazu clan residence in Kagoshima. The 17th-century traditional Japanese garden was designed for a samurai lord and offers breathtaking views of Kagoshima Bay.

This beautiful Japanese garden is UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Sengan-en Garden has spectacular "borrowed" views of the Sakurajima volcano and includes shrines, ponds, running streams, stone bridges, hiking trails through lush forest where you can enjoy the scenery and beautiful nature.

After visiting the gardens we took the 15 minutes ferry from Kagoshima Honko Port . On a clear day we could enjoy beautiful scenery on the short cruise to Mt. Sakurajima but it was cold and gloomy.

We visited Sakurajima-Kinkowan Geopark where you can take a stroll through the park, enjoy the incredible scenery and learn about the land and its long volcanic history.

Did you know that Kagoshima Prefecture is one of the top producers of tea in Japan?

We saw many green tea fields.
