Day 12 - St. George’s, Grenada West Indies
It was an early day. We had a 5 hour excursion around the island. As we took off right outside the port, it started raining. It was a gloomy, cloudy, very misty morning, but apparently it’s the rainy season, and it is like that every day for at least 6 months straight. It was 8:30am and the city was already bustling. The traffic was bumper to bumper. One thing I can say… driving in Grenada is an off-road adventure. The roads are very narrow, winding, steep and hilly. We had a very skilled bus driver that has been doing this for over 30 years, but the ride was exciting to say the least. Many stray dogs and cats that were wandering in the middle of the road didn't mind the cars at all, and the oncoming traffic just had to try and avoid hitting them.
We visited Fort Frederick, Black Bay Beach, Marquis Indigenous Village, Grand Etang National Park, Annadale Falls, and we ended up with a stroll along The Carenage - the local harbor that reminded me a little of Portofino village in Italy - the Caribbean’s most picturesque harbor.
Grenada is known for being one of the largest producers and exporters of many spices and for that reason is called a “Spice Isle”. As we were driving around the island we saw many fruit and spice trees growing along the roads, breadfruit trees, banana trees, mango trees, cocoa trees, nutmeg trees etc. I have never seen nutmeg growing before. There are many goats tied up and grazing at the side of the roads. You can hear chickens and roosters everywhere you go.
The flora and fauna is very lush in Grenada.
When we arrived at the Grand Etang National Park it stopped raining but the roads were so muddy and slippery that everyone had the mud up to their ankles. My brand new, white sneakers got ruined. One person slipped and fell on her head. Luckily she didn’t hurt herself because in Chichen Itza one person was taken to hospital on stretchers, and one lady twisted her ankle.
In the afternoon the sun came out and it became super hot. We ended up stopping for an ice-cream. I wanted to try the local specialty - nutmeg ice-cream. Unfortunately they didn’t have any nutmeg flavor so I chose my favorite pistachio, Artur had strawberry cream.. $28 later all I can say I regret the flavorless heap of cold sugar.
At least the complimentary Stag lager we got at the Grand Etang National Park was delicious, and free, lol.
Tomorrow is a day at sea. Easy and relaxing day. Next stop Devil’s Island, FRr. Guiana. I’m very excited about this stop. I remember watching film “Papillon” many years ago. It made an great impression on me, so I’m looking forward to this mysterious island with scary name.
As the last entertainment of the day for us was hypnotist comedy show with TYZE. Very entertaining and funny.
