Day 9 - Kralendijk, Bonaire.
Bon dia! We arrived in beautiful Bonaire. Kralendijk is the capital city and main port of the island of Bonaire.
About 70 percent of the island's surface is coral limestone, from which Kralendijk, meaning “coral dike,” derives its name.
Bonaire is one of the three ABC islands, we visited out of order (Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire).
The island is predominately known for its diving—both scuba and snorkeling.
We are not divers, so we didn’t do any scuba diving, but let me tell you, this place is surrounded by the most amazing, turquoise, crystal clear waters. I’m impressed.
We did the 4 hour tour around the island. It was a beautiful, sunny and very hot day. We got on a nice and cool bus and our driver/tour guide took us to the salt flats where we could see the whole process of making salt and the salt pyramids. The Salt Pier is also popular dive site and we saw many divers everywhere. We stopped to take some pictures and we moved on to see more beautiful places like so called 1000 steps, Pekelmeer flamingo sanctuary, Lac Bay, lighthouse, Jibe city, Washington-Slagbaai National Park and much more. We saw many wild donkeys along the way, iguanas, other colorful lizards, birds like parakeets, orange troupials, hummingbirds and most beautiful flamingos.
After the excursion we went for a walk around the town. I liked the little shops and different restaurants that are not usual cruise type shops like in many other ports. No chain fast food on every corner. We enjoyed very much the typical Dutch fast food though 😜like frikandellen, kroketten and bitterballen with Amstel beer 😅
Went out again after dinner to take few pictures with Christmas lights.
No show tonight. We met friends in the Schooner bar, and were hanging out for the rest of the evening.
After few brüderschafts we called it a night.
Fun facts about Bonaire: Bonaire's airport is called Flamingo Airport. That's because the island is home to over 10,000 of the pink birds.
