Day 34
January 13, 2024
Elephant Island, Antarctica
Can’t get enough of the views of Antarctica.
It’s an absolutely wonderful experience!
Went to the gym this morning and saw hundreds of whales and penguins feeding in the beautiful, cold waters.
That’s the way to exercise!
Antarctica's waters are abundant with krill that’s why so many whales come here to feed in the summer time. They don’t come here to breed.
Elephant Island, Antarctica, is named after the elephant seals that make their home there (as well as for its elephant-like shape). It’s an ice-covered, mountainous island off the coast of Antarctica best known for its misty snow-capped peaks of dark rock.
We arrived around 4pm. and stayed for several hours. We skipped dinner at the MDR and went on the top deck to take some pictures and enjoy the scenery. We saw again many whales, but too far away to take good pictures.
Leaving now back through Drake Passage towards Port Stanley, Falkland Islands.
Current temperature 34F/1C
Sunrise at present position 3:44am.
Sunset at present position 9:52pm.
Fun fact: Penguin is Antarctica’s “national” anima
In the evening we had a Penguin theme dinner and party in the center.
Many guests went all out and dressed in black, white and yellow. Much fun! 🐧
